Dundela 0-1 HW Welders
IFA Interim League Cup (final) - Tuesday, 9th December, 2008
HW WELDERS lifted the inaugural IFA Interim League Cup with victory over old foes Dundela in the final at Seaview.

Although trailing their east Belfast rivals by five points in the league Craig Stannex's side were deserving victors in a game they dominated throughout.

Indeed, they might have taken an early lead when Ryan Beattie sent a volley just wide of the right post while, around the half-hour mark, a Colin Magill header from a Ryan Harvey corner was well gathered by Duns 'keeper Paul Hughes.

Dundela themselves could well have broken the deadlock themselves soon after only for Darren McKay to fire wide from 18 yards after being teed up by Marc Roy.

Further chances for the Welders followed, primarily from James Bell, before, three minutes from the break, Glenn McMillan grabbed what proved to be the winner when he got his head to an inswinging Beattie cross to nod the ball crisply past Hughes.

Brian Hylands squandered an opportunity for the much improved Dundela soon after the interval while, a little later, McKay failed to get the necessary purchase to trouble Welders 'keeper James Thompson with a low shot.

McKay was thwarted again by defender Carl Rezai who just about got a touch to the ball as the former Ballyclare Comrades frontman was poised to pull the trigger.

However, as the game wore on, the Welders regained the ascendancy and could easily have finished more emphatic winners when Ryan Brown missed from close range after Chris Towell had set him up before curling the ball just over with a later attempt.
