Dergview 0-1 Limavady United
IFA Championship - Saturday, 10th January, 2009
By Clive Edgar

LIMAVADY United stretched their unbeaten run to nine games with this victory over Dergview in poor conditions.

The game was only given the go ahead early in the morning but as the pitch continued to thaw out it turned into a bog making conditions difficult for the players.

United once again created several good chances but once again failed to capitalise on a lot of pressure.

Paul Owens grabbed the games only goal early in the second half as the home side failed to even have a shot on target.

The Roesiders almost took the lead in the 11th minute but Stephen Lowry slid the ball into the side netting after an excellent run and cross from Joe Gray.

Just a minute later Ryan McIlmoyle tested the Dergview goalkeeper but he was equal to the shot and saved easily.

United also had several quick breaks and excellent crosses into the box without anyone getting a vital touch on the ball.

Dergview's only chance of the first half came in the 24th minute. However Chris McKendry in the visitor's goal had nothing to worry about as Warner Mullan blazed the ball well over the bar.

In the 34th minute McIlmoyle once again had a shot on target but once again James O'Reilly in the home goal watched the ball sail over the bar.

Four minutes later midfielder Lee Patrick tried his luck from twenty five yards but once again the ball went over the bar.

In the final minute of the first half Gareth McConnachie saw his free-kick end up in the arms of O'Reilly.

The second half was only a minute old when the Roesiders almost took the lead. Unfortunately both McIlmoyle's and Gray's effort were saved.

Only three minutes later United came even closer to scoring. This time Lowry met Gray's cross and his shot struck the post and was cleared before it could roll across the line.

The visitors did take the lead in the 52nd minute with what proved to be the winner. Owens cross was blocked initially but he did well to follow-up and blast the ball high into the net.

The midfielder almost doubled United's advantage two minutes later but his long range effort flashed narrowly wide of the target.

In the 55th minute Lowry burst through on goal and slipped the ball under the the 'keeper but the goal was ruled out harshly for offside.

United were awarded a free-kick in the 59th minute and Lowry's quick thinking almost paid off as he took a quick free-kick but his shot drifted agonisingly wide.

The home side's first chance of the second half came in the 67th minute. Hugh Carlin's long ball found Stephen Campbell, however the midfielder's effort was well off target.

Gray and Lowry again combined in the 69th minute but this time Lowry placed his header wide of the target.

A minute later Brian McClean burst from midfield but elected to shoot when Gray was better placed and McClean's effort was easily saved.

Owens turned provider in the 76th minute when his pass split the home defence but Gray fired just wide of the target.

Mullan had another effort for the hosts in the 78th minute but once again the strikers effort was well over the bar.

McIlmoyle and Owens linked up well in the 81st minute of the game but the latter's strike was deflected just wide.

The game was temporarily stopped in the 85th minute when Gary Dickson crashed badly into the advertising hoardings. Thankfully he wasn't badly injured.

The final chance of the game came in stoppage time when Martin Cutmore crashed a wonderful free-kick off the bar.
