Killymoon Rangers 1-3 Armagh City
IFA Championship - Friday, 22nd August, 2008
ARMAGH City huffed and puffed but eventually took all three points from Friday night’s trip to Killymoon Rangers.

It looked as though City would be held to a frustrating point on the artificial third generation surface when captain Iain Latimer was sent off, but two goals in the last 15 minutes sealed the points.

City could easily have taken the lead after four minutes when Peter McNeill’s free kick found Brian McCone and he released Scott Walker, who saw his shot well blocked.

Killymoon gave City a real fright, however, just a minute later when Warren Smith’s effort was tipped onto the crossbar by William McFrederick.

But City took a deserved lead on 35 minutes. McNeill’s corner was headed on by Walker and Gavin McParland was on hand at the back post to head home his second goal in as many games.

But the hosts were level within a minute of conceding the lead.

The unpredictable bounce of the ball caught the City defence out and Smith made the most of his chance to score.

That goal seemed to spark City into life and Campbell should have reinstated their lead two minutes later but his shot right in front of goals was well saved.

And four minutes from the break Campbell went even closer when his effort from an acute angle came back off the crossbar.

While City struggled with the surface in the first half, they were still creating their chances but in the second half McKinstry’s team came out with all guns blazing.

And they came close to taking the lead seconds after the restart when McParland headed just wide from McNeill’s pin-point cross.

On 48 minutes Aurimas Meidus found McNeill free on the edge of the box and his powerful shot forced an excellent save from Gareth Maguire.

City continued to turn the screw and they went close again on 59 minutes when Brian McCone beat the offside trap only to slam his shot off the post.

Armagh were well on top but they came close to falling behind in controversial circumstances on 65 minutes.

The ball was blasted at Latimer inside the box and hit his arm. The referee adjudged the Armagh skipper to have moved his hand towards the ball and then proceeded to show the central defender his second red card of the season.

Justice from City’s point of view was, however, restored when McFrederick made the save from Smith’s spot kick.

Had that goal gone in it would have been hard to see City coming back but it was Killymoon who failed to make the most of their numerical advantage.

On 74 minutes Adrian Ferson fired well over the top for the hosts from a decent position but it was City who would regain the lead moments later.

McGeown caught the Killymoon defence napping from a quick free kick and he put McCone into space who made no mistake in hammering home.

And the three points were sealed a minute from time when the bounce of the ball this time proved to be Killymoon’s undoing and that allowed Campbell to race on and score their third goal.
